Dawson County Exceptional Education Department is dedicated to providing students with disabilities and their parents with the most appropriate ways of meeting student's needs. Below you will find two important GA DOE resources for students with disabilities. In accordance with IDEA regulations, the Dawson County School system seeks to ensure that all disabled students (ages 3-21) who are in need of special education within its jurisdiction are identified, located, and evaluated, including those attending private school and home school. Final identification of students with disabilities and programming for such students occur only after an appropriate evaluation and a determination by a Placement Team. Once it is determined a student is in need of special education services, they may receive these services through the end of the semester in which they turn 22 years of age.
If the “child find” process indicates that a student may require special education and supportive services in order to benefit from regular education, the student shall be referred to the Placement Team to determine the student’s eligibility for special education services. If you know a child with a disability who is not being served, please notify Adam Maroney, Director of Exceptional Children.
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act requires that local school systems locate and provide consultation to parents of students who have a disability or parents who suspect their child may have a disability, who attend parentally placed private schools (in the local school system’s district) or who are homeschooled (and reside in Dawson County). This consultation is also to be provided to administrators of any private school located in Dawson County. Therefore, the Dawson County School System is hosting a “Child Find” meeting on Friday, July 17, 2026, from 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM. The meeting will take place at the Dawson County Schools Professional Development Center, located at 28 Main St. The Director of Special Education, Mr. Adam Maroney, will be present to provide information on special education services, evaluation procedures, and proportionate share. Public Notice of Destruction of Records of Special Education Students
The Dawson County School District Department of Special Education announces the intent to destroy specific special education records. Records will be destroyed that were collected, maintained, or used in providing free appropriate public education for disabled and/or exceptional students in the Dawson County School District. This notice complies with the district's comprehensive plan for special education as required by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
Special Education Records for students who were born before July 31, 2002, and those who have graduated with general education diplomas are no longer needed for educational purposes. These records might, however, be needed by the student or parent for Social Security or other reasons. If a student or parent would like copies of a student's special education records, he or she should contact Crystal Morgan in the Special Education Office at 706-265-3246.
The Dawson County Board of Education plans to destroy the above-referenced Special Education Records on September 30, 2026.
