Title I

What is Title I?

Title I, Part A is a federal program that provides additional funding to help improve the academic performance of students facing economic and educational challenges. This program works by allocating money to state education agencies, who then distribute these funds to local school districts. The amount each district receives is determined by a formula that takes into account the number of school-age children from low-income families living in that area, as reported by the US Census Bureau.
The Georgia Department of Education plays a crucial role in managing Title I, Part A within the state. Through its dedicated unit, the department offers support to local education agencies in various ways. This includes providing technical assistance, sharing resources, and monitoring programs to ensure they meet the intended goals. The ultimate aim of these efforts is to give all children a fair chance at receiving a high-quality education and to help close the gaps in education achievement, as outlined in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

Black's Mill Elementary, Kilough Elementary, Riverview Elementary, and Robinson Elementary all receive funding as Title I schools. We would like to share with you what Title I is and how it can help your child in school.
  • Title I is a federally funded program that helps students to achieve proficiency on high academic standards.
  • Dawson County Schools offers Title I through schoolwide programs at the elementary school level. All Dawson County elementary schools are designated as schoolwide Title I schools.
  • A schoolwide program is designed to upgrade the entire educational program at the Title I school to ensure all students, particularly those who are low-achieving, reach the state academic achievement standards.

Parents...you are valuable stakeholders on our Title I team!

Here are some ways that you can support your child’s learning at home and can become a part of your child’s learning at school:

  • Attend the Title I annual orientation meeting at the beginning of the year. Ask questions and offer opinions.
  • Support your child’s Parent-School Compact. The school staff, the teacher, your child, and you must all be committed to your child’s learning. The compact describes the responsibility we all share in helping your child reach those goals.
  • Visit your child’s school as often as you can. Help in the classroom. Join your child for lunch. Attend a special program in the evening. Read to the class. Your visits show both your interest and your support.
  • Come to parent meetings. They focus on ways you can support your child’s learning.
  • Check out parent materials in the school Parent Resource Room – manipulatives, literacy materials, games, and learning kits are available for you to check out to help your child at home.
  • Attend parent/teacher conferences and review the report cards provided throughout the year.
  • Participate in the district survey at the end of the year. Let us know how we can improve.

Our highly qualified teachers attend workshops and conferences to make sure they know the most effective methods for helping students meet their learning goals. This professional development allows Title I teachers to learn about...

  • new teaching methods,
  • effective planning for classroom instruction,
  • ways to promote learning,
  • how to involve parents in the classroom, and
  • methods for evaluating how students are improving.
